Kentucky Junior Academy of Science
(KJAS)

Welcome to the Kentucky Junior Academy of Science (KJAS) web site.  The Junior Academy was begun over fifty years ago to foster an interest in science for high school students in Kentucky.  KJAS has expanded over the years to include middle school students as well as high school students.  Members of the Junior Academy present the results of their projects each spring at the KJAS annual meeting.  Preliminary presentations are conducted during the morning sessions.  The winners of the morning sessions make presentations in the afternoon finalists sessions.
Two overall winners are selected and these students represent Kentucky at the National American Junior Academies of Sciences (AmJAS) meeting held in February the following year. The national AmJAS convention meets in conjugation with AAAS, the American Association for the Advancement of Science. As the world’s largest general science organization and publisher of Science, AAAS has more than 138,000 members and 275 affiliated societies.  One very important aim and purpose of the AAAS is to reach out to young scientists in middle school and high school. It recognizes that these young people are its future.

This web site was developed to provide information about the KJAS in general, student research grants, annual meeting information, a link to the parent academy [the Kentucky Academy of Science], interesting educational web sites [subdivided by grade level], and links to other Junior Academies across the country.  The handbook section gives details on how to become a member, choosing your topic, how to prepare your abstract and guidelines on paper presentation.

Members of the Kentucky Jr. Academy have the opportunity:

  • to interact with other high school students across the state who are interested in science and technology.
  • to apply for money to design and complete science projects.
  • to present projects at the annual KJAS meeting.
  • to publish an abstract in the Journal of the Kentucky Academy of Science.
